Leader Woos off Springs of Departed Asians Back

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

The Uganda Investment Authority is encouraging the off-spring of the Asians who were forced out by former President Idi Amin to come back, a top official said last week.

“Most of the Asians that were originally expelled from Uganda are now quite old, mostly in their 70s. I want to encourage their offspring to come back to Uganda. They will appreciate it and its opportunities, especially in agro-processing,” Rajni Tailor, the chairman of the Indian Association in Uganda, said.

“The world needs foodstuffs and Uganda has fertile land most of which does not need fertilizers to produce good crops unlike in most countries. Third generation off-spring will bring IT knowledge to the business, which we did not have,” he said.

Tailor said the youngsters should join their forefathers in their return to Uganda. He said over 100 couples had already made the trip to the country some of whom found very poignant memories.

“One guy in his 70s who had been in Kisoro found on his return there 36 years later that the parrot he left behind still remembered him, Another one came back with a watch he bought in Kampala over 36 years ago. It was amazing, you can imagine,” Tailor disclosed.

He was explaining the background to their recent meeting with President Yoweri Museveni who invited Asians back to Uganda.
